What are you passionate about?

אברהם אבינו מתלהב מעשיית חסד

* Translation by Yehoshua Siskin

We do many things in our daily routine, yet what’s important is not what we do but how we do it. When we do something with passion, excitement, and a sense of urgency, it’s something that we love and is especially dear to us.

This week’s Torah portion describes the hospitality Avraham extended to three desert passersby as follows:

“And Avraham hastened into the tent to Sara, and said, ‘Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes.’ And Avraham ran to the herd, and fetched a calf tender and good, and gave it to a servant boy who hurried to prepare it.”

We are used to getting excited when it comes to material gain, personal achievements, and joyful occasions. Yet Avraham found his greatest delight in welcoming guests. He not only feeds his guests with tasty dishes, but runs to prepare these delicacies without delay. Hosting others excites and enlivens him above all else. HIs mission in life is to give.

Everyone knows to what they are devoted and in which pursuits they are always ready to invest themselves wholeheartedly. Avraham found his passion in giving to others and instructs us how this is to be done. We have numerous opportunities, every day and every hour, to look around and see how we can honor Avraham’s legacy by bringing his passion for giving into our own lives.
