 It Can Be Fixed!

על חטא העגל בפרשת השבוע

This Shabbat morning, in synagogues we will read the Torah portion "Ki Tisa," about the sin of the Golden Calf.

The people of Israel didn't want to wait any longer for Moshe, who was supposed to descend from Mount Sinai with the Tablets of the Covenant. The people asked to make themselves a golden calf — something quick, accessible, available, but utterly wrong.

They decided to replace the eternal truth with a substitute, and began dancing around it and worshipping it.

Moshe came down from the mountain and shattered the Tablets of the Covenant. It was a moment of breaking, of tragedy.
But then the repair begins — the people recalculate their path, Moshe pleads and prays, and then merits reconciliation, forgiveness, a second chance.

They receive a second set of tablets, whole and complete, and the journey continues.

The message from this story is eternal: this is a descent for the sake of ascent. Our commentators describe how the people walked through the desert carrying both the broken fragments of the first tablets and the whole tablets together — to remember the mistakes they made, but also the ability to return to themselves and make things right.

May we always merit reconciliation and repair. Shabbat Shalom.
