5 Things for Shabbat Parshat Vayikra

פרשת ויקרא והכנה לפסח תשפה

1. Mazal Tov, on Shabbat morning we will begin reading a new book in the Torah, the Book of Leviticus, with Parshat Vayikra, after finishing the Book of Exodus last week.

2. The new book mostly describes the work of the Mishkan, which was the spiritual center of the people in the desert (and then in Israel). It details the sacrificial service of the Kohanim and deals with spiritual concepts that are somewhat difficult for us to grasp today, such as holiness, impurity, and purity. The most tangible commandment that emphasizes this today is family purity, in our “Mishkan,” our private home.

3. Our commentators explain one of the reasons for the Mishkan service in the desert: we did not leave Egypt to rest and stop working, but to act and do, though in a positive way of holiness and repairing the world. The people of Israel don't wait until they reach the land of Israel but begin this during their journey through the desert.

4. This week the month of Nisan began. Jewish schools around the world have started their break, and Pesach preparations are already underway. These can be days of cooperation, helping at home and family connection, and also days of pressure and arguments. Pay attention to the soundtrack of your home during these days and how we conduct ourselves.

5. Reminder: This year Shabbat is adjacent to the Seder night (which we will celebrate at the end of Shabbat, next week). It's advisable to prepare in advance and learn the laws and customs. This coming Shabbat, sermons and lessons will be held in honor of "Shabbat HaGadol," the Shabbat of preparation for Pesach. We highly recommend them.
Shabbat Shalom.
