Five ideas about Rosh Chodesh Nisan

5 דברים לראש חודש ניסן

* Translated by Janine Muller Sherr

1. Chodesh Tov! Today is Rosh Chodesh Nisan. Every Rosh Chodesh is a time of renewal, and this is certainly the case with this Rosh Chodesh that ushers in Pesach, the holiday of freedom and redemption.

2. On Rosh Chodesh, we add the prayer of Hallel (chapters from Tehillim expressing gratitude and joy). We also add a paragraph called “Ya’ale Ve’yavo” to the Amidah and to Birkat Hamazon, as well as the Musaf (additional) prayer.

3. The ancient name of Nisan is derived from the word nitzan (bud). Pesach is the holiday of spring, when the buds open and nature renews itself. It is our opportunity to notice the potential for growth both in nature and in ourselves. Therefore, we also recite birkat ha’ilanot (the blessing over the trees) upon seeing blossoming fruit trees.

4. Our sages also connect Nisan to the word nes (miracle) since it is the month of miracles associated with Pesach. The Exodus from Egypt reminds us that we need not accept the status quo. Any situation can be turned around, with God’s help.

5. On Rosh Chodesh Nisan, Jews from Libya and Tunisia observe a unique ritual called “Bsisa,” from the word for base, commemorating the foundation of the mishkan (sanctuary) in the desert which took place on Rosh Chodesh Nisan. It is a home-centered ceremony in which family members prepare and eat a dish that is a mixture of almonds, dates, sugar, olive oil and other ingredients. The head of the household recites blessings for sustenance, abundance, good health, and joyous tidings.

May all our prayers be answered.
