Today in Israel we mark Yom HaZikaron, Remembrance Day for our fallen soldiers and victims of terror. At the entrance to Jerusalem there is a new giant sign picturing one of these soldiers with his unforgettable last words. Here is the story:
“Shalom Sivan, My name is Eden, sister of Sergeant Roi Dawy, Hy”d, who fell in battle in Gaza. For me, Remembrance Day is not only a day of sadness, but a day in which we connect to the fallen and draw strength and meaning from their spirit. A day of pride, profound meaning, and awesome power.
It was important for me to share the spirit of my brother Roi. Therefore we hung a giant sign with his portrait at the entrance to Jerusalem together with the last words he wrote to us: ‘Just get stronger from everything.’
All the hundreds of thousands of people who come to Jerusalem are now looking at Roi, reading his words, and drawing strength to face every crisis, whether big or small, in their lives.
There are generous individuals who have helped us pay for this sign. It is a bit different from other advertisements and slogans we hope to keep it up for as long as possible.
I wish that everyone who reads these words will adopt the spirit of Roi, and that all of us will just get stronger from everything.”
