Many of us are able to recite the pre-flight safety instructions by heart, but on my recent trip to London, this sentence caught my attention:
“In case of emergency, put your own oxygen mask on first, before assisting your children or anyone else sitting next to you.”
This is such a simple but key concept: First, ensure your own safety and well-being. This is not selfishness, but common sense. If you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be able to take care of others.
For example: Parents who are calm and happy are better able to care for their children. If they take care of themselves and nurture their relationship with their spouse, the entire family will benefit.
Likewise, in every area of life, it is important to “fill your own cup” and pay attention to your own needs. If your cup is empty, you have less to offer to others.
These days, with all the struggles and challenges we face, remember that prioritizing yourself — your own body and soul — is not shameful. It is vital.
