Tomorrow: The first Shabbat of winter!

שבת חורף ה1

*  Translated by Janine Muller Sherr

While the results of this week’s election in Israel remain unclear, one headline is certain: Tomorrow night will begin the first Shabbat of winter time in Israel and this is important to keep in mind.

Tomorrow will be a very short Friday. Candle lighting in Israel will be very early compared to last week—at around 4 pm.

Today is Thursday and we can use it to begin our preparations for Shabbat: to plan our menu, shop for food, anticipate the guests we will be welcoming at our table, and think about how we can make our meals special.

In New York, the first short Shabbat of the year will be next Friday. But no matter where you live in the world, it is worthwhile to plan ahead so that you can welcome Shabbat with more joy and less stress, just as we would welcome a royal visitor to our home.

I encourage you to think of others who might benefit from this reminder.

Shabbat Shalom!
