A group of students met with the Lubavitcher Rebbe, leader of the Chabad movement, and one of them asked: "I heard that you can perform miracles, is that true?".
The Rebbe smiled and answered: "The truth is, each one of us can perform a miracle and overcome nature. Everyone has a divine soul that can overcome the natural limitations within us, and everyone can use it and create a miracle, meaning to overcome their own natural tendencies, their impulses and inclinations."
And then the Rebbe suggested to the students: "To prove this, let's perform a miracle now. Each of you think about an area where you think you cannot change, such as anger, gossip, prayer, Shabbat, and make a resolution to improve in that area. You will decide - and the divine soul will help you overcome. A person who rises above their natural tendency - that is a miracle!".
Today, the 10th of Shevat, 75 years ago, the leadership period of the Lubavitcher Rebbe began. How many small and large miracles this concept of his has created in the world.
This week we also read the portion of "Beshalach," which tells of the great miracle of the splitting of the Red Sea. Our commentators remind us: when God intervenes in nature, it is a miracle. But we need not only to pray for a miracle, but to be a miracle. To change reality ourselves, for the better. Everyone is invited to try and perform such a small miracle, in their life.
