Updating the best version of ourselves

אל תתני לאדם שאת עכשיו להפריע לאדם שאת יכולה להיות

*  Translation by Yehoshua Siskin

“Don’t let the person you are now get in the way of the person you can become.”

This lesson was taught to us by psychologist Dr. Miriam Avneri-Cohen at the beginning of the weekly class of the Mitchadshot community.  She then asked each of us to imagine a better version of ourselves. If apps can update their versions, why can’t we?

But to do that, she said, we have to leave our comfort zone. We have to leave behind that familiar feeling of control. True, change isn’t fun. It requires us first to move from the comfort zone into the zone of fear, into a state of uncertainty. But that is the only way to eventually reach the growth zone. That is the only way to move forward.

We are in the midst of the Ten Days of Repentance, (the days between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur) days dedicated to correction and positive change. But to make our new changed selves a reality, we need to pause for a moment and think about who we are now—and who we truly want to become.

Good luck.
